ARMITAGE ACADEMY CLOSING ITS DOORS AFTER 35 YEARS.

Armitage Academy closed its doors after providing 35 years of education for the community. Armitage Academy, a private independent non-for-profit K-8 school, announced to its parents and faculty on Wednesday evening, April 13, 2011, that they will not be opening for the 2011-2012 school year. Lower enrollment combined with financial concerns lead the board of trustees to the difficult decision to close the only independent school in Kenosha County.

Armitage Academy was formed by a group of parents and teachers after the closing of Kemper Hall in 1975. It started its first year with just 38 students and rented space on 75th St. Within two years enrollment increased to over 80 students and the school purchased and moved to its current location at 6032 8th Avenue. Armitage was the first independent non-denominational school in Kenosha. The school recognized the importance of basic structural programs which aimed to function with the closest possible integration between disciplined study, the creativity of independence, and of critical thinking. Between disciplined study and creativity, there are no contradictions, for both are necessary if the student is to be well-rounded, knowledgeable and controlled as he or she survive in this complex, competitive and pressure ridden society. This was the philosophy of Armitage Academy when it first opened and held true to the end.

We would like to thank all of our supporters past and present for believing in Armitage for all these years.
