Principle-Based Character Education

At Armitage Academy, we prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century by instilling character-building principles that will become lifelong habits. These habits are based on Dr. Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Be Proactive

Students learn to take responsibility for their actions. They are encouraged to make choices based on their values, not moods, and how to focus on what they can control, which includes their choices and attitudes.

Begin With The End In Mind

Students are encouraged to envision what it is they would like to do, to become, and then create a "blueprint" (plan the steps) to make it happen - not just for themselves but for their school and community. This skill will be an invaluable tool throughout their lives.

Put First Things First

Students learn to manage their time more effectively through weekly and daily planning, prioritizing, and creating short and long-range goals for themselves.

Think Win-Win

Students learn how to relate positively to others by practicing cooperation, teamwork and good attitudes. They are encouraged to live by the "Golden Rule" by seeking solutions that will be mutually beneficial to everyone.

Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood

Students learn both how to be good listeners and how to express their own views more effectively. They discover how each of us sees the world differently and how trying to see another's point of view can bring mutual understanding.

Sharpen The Saw

Students learn to honor themselves as whole people in order to renew their energy. They discover the importance of the social/emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual aspects of themselves.
