Create, Discover, and Find Solutions Through Art

Our art program emphasizes the process of creation over product. We help students discover ways to turn mistakes into creative solutions, both independently and through problem-solving with peers. Students are coached through open-ended projects to encourage experimentation and discovery of many possible solutions.

“To do the work of artists, children need opportunities to behave, think, and perform as artists.” - George Szekely

It is my belief that everyone is an artist, especially children. They are naturally curious, unconsciously creative, and continuously making connections.  They are very good at trying on different scenarios, experimenting, brain-storming and problem solving.  It is the process of learning and growing; it is the process of art making.

I teach the basics of art; vocabulary, concepts, common media and skills, and I introduce the better known artists. The projects the children work on are open ended; however, they must work within the boundaries of the concept, media or skills. By the 6th grade the art room is run more like a studio than a classroom. Students are encouraged to “push the envelope” and try for ideas beyond their own “norm.”

The Art Chair Project by the 8th grade class starts with a research paper on an artist, art style, or an art movement. The students first reproduce a small piece of artwork from their research. Then, using their chosen artwork as a springboard, they generate and regenerate ideas and create the art chairs you see today.

Armitage Academy strongly believes in the liberal arts, which include the visual/theater arts, creative movement and music. By combining the arts with the vigorous academics we bring out the ingenuity and leadership qualities of each child.
